Many organizations in Mexico active the brigades of early warning and rapid response to mitigate the impact of the Tropical Storms (Gamma and Zeta) and the hurricane category 2 (Delta) during the two first weeks of October 2020.
The intensity of the Tropical Cyclones afected many coral reefs units of the Reef National Park of Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, Mexico. The managing organization of the area, The National Comission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) along with the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA-CRIAP Puerto Morelos) made a quick evaluation in the most important coral reefs units to active the rapid response brigades.
The intervention of the brigades were enough to mitigate the impacts of Tropical Cyclones on coral reefs. They were formed by the personal of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, dive centers, hotels and volunteers to support the cause.
The developed activities during 11 days were the following:
- Monitoring of the coral reefs units
- Managing Fund to increase training, to acquire equipment and material.
- Share and public the results of the brigades in social medias and the official website.
- Training to new brigades
- Planning for the next hurricane season 2021
