It was the worst bleaching event in its documented history, and monitoring teams from all four countries continue to measure its aftermath.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid bg-image-ps-inherit\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element vc_custom_1792734305902\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div>\n<div>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The MAR in Numbers<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element vc_custom_1792763673444\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyreefs.org\/en\/healthy-reefs-data\/report-cards\"> 2024 MAR Report Card<\/a>, prepared by Healthy Reefs for Healthy People, documented that:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The heat stress began in June 2023, lasted four more months, and exceeded double the previous regional record (7.0 \u00b0C-weeks, in 2017; Mu\u00f1iz-Castillo et al., 2024).<\/li>\n<li>Approximately 40% of corals were affected, with severe mortality at several sites. In the Northern Complex of the Belize Barrier, Glover's Reef, and Guatemala, more than 60% of corals were severely impacted. The Lettuce coral (<em>Agaricia tenuifolia<\/em>) was the hardest hit: 43% of its colonies were completely bleached and 23% partially bleached.<\/li>\n<li>The progress of the event is documented in real-time in the Bay Islands, Honduras, through in situ sensors and satellite records (Green et al., 2026).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9368 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/3_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792722384433.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/3_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792722384433.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/3_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792722384433-768x477.jpg 768w, https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/3_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792722384433-1536x954.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/3_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792722384433-2048x1272.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/3_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792722384433-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><em>Photo: Claudia Guerrero<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid bg-image-ps-inherit\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element vc_custom_1792733323698\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div>\n<div>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Honduras: In Tela and Roatan, high coverage reefs have changed<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element vc_custom_1792763715871\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A benthic monitoring of the seafloor (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agrra.org\">AGRRA<\/a>) in Tela and Roat\u00e1n shows what three years of elevated heat stress left behind, with peaks of 18 and 12 \u00b0C-weeks, coral cover dropped to 60% in Tela and 44% in Roat\u00e1n, while fleshy macroalgae increased to 58% and 38%, respectively (Paden et al., 2026). Coral diversity and the Reef Functional Index also decreased, indicating the impact of bleaching, with severe losses of <em>Agaricia tenuifolia<\/em>, a previously dominant species. Even so, some sites retained more coverage and diversity, a local difference that regional averages do not capture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the researchers, Banco Capiro, in Tela Bay, was considered a \"bright spot\" of the Caribbean: a turbid reef that maintained exceptional coral cover (45 \u00b1 3%) despite repeated thermal stress events of 12 \u00b0C-weeks or more in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Its case shows that resisting before does not guarantee surviving after. A high coverage dominated by <em>Agaricia tenuifolia<\/em>, susceptible to bleaching, may conceal fragility, and the refuge offered by turbid reefs has limits (Carolan et al., 2026).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9369\" src=\"https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/2_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792721481220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/2_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792721481220.jpg 2547w, https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/2_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792721481220-768x477.jpg 768w, https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/2_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792721481220-1536x955.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/2_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792721481220-2048x1273.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/coralmar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/2_PC_Claudia-Guerrero_HRHP-scaled-e1792721481220-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><em>Photo: Claudia Guerrero<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element vc_custom_1792732903002\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div>\n<div>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Impact on the Mexican Caribbean: from Growth to Erosion<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid bg-image-ps-inherit\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element vc_custom_1792763763716\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Puerto Morelos, Mexico, heat stress reached 14.29 \u00b0C-weeks and the maximum recorded temperature was 34.8 \u00b0C. By August 2023, 57% of elkhorn coral (<em>Acropora palmata<\/em>) had already died and the remaining 43% was bleached. By July 2024, mortality of this species reached 100% across the 170,000 m\u00b2 of shallow reef analyzed with drones (Birkart and \u00c1lvarez-Filip, 2025).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another profound consequence for the ecosystem is documented by \u00c1lvarez-Filip et al. (2026). The researchers evaluated carbonate budgets, that is, how much a reef builds or destroys, at 68 sites in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, including SAM sites such as Puerto Morelos, Punta Allen, and Banco Chinchorro. More than 70% of Caribbean sites shifted to net erosional states following the 2023 heat, compounded by the effects of stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD). In contrast, Gulf of Mexico reefs maintained positive budgets thanks to their heat-tolerant massive corals. Even so, the 2024 MAR Report Card shows that local action continues to yield measurable results.
