Acropora 2023: Heat-related Mortality,Resistance or Rescue
What’s happening? What can we learn? What’s next?
Date:
Monday November 13, 2023
12:00 pm (noon) Eastern US, Cancun, Colombia, Jamaica
1:00 pm Eastern Caribbean

Focus of the November CCT meeting
In response to the significant, thermal bleaching-related losses of acroporids in some Caribbean areas, Acropora will be a major focus of our November 2023 CCT meeting. Lessons learned will be relevant to the future care of all rescued corals, including species that are susceptible to STCLD.
Speakers and Topics:
- Esther Peters: Mysteries Abound: Pathogenic Agents of Disease
- Antigua, Belize: Jamaica, and Florida: Mortality, Resistance or Rescue
- Group Discussion: Rethinking Coral Rescues for a Warmer World
Mysteries Abound: Pathogenic Agents of Disease
Marine invertebrate histopathologist and environmental scientist, Esther Peters will introduce the many factors influencing susceptibility to abiotic and biotic pathogens and clarify the difficulties in recognizing biotic diseases known only by different common names.
Heat-related Mortality, Resistance or Rescue
Caribbean-area speakers (e.g., Antigua, Belize, Jamaica) will exemplify the responses of wild and nursery-raised acroporids to different levels of thermal warming in 2023. An emergency, large-scale, ex-situ rescue of stressed corals will be described for Florida.
Rethinking Coral Rescues for a Warmer World
Starting in 2024, how can we strategically improve future rescue efforts of all vulnerable Caribbean corals in our more rapidly warming world will be open for group discussion with all participants and speakers.
